A Bridge Between Love and the Underworld
The story of Persephone is one of the most famous tales in Greek mythology, and its association with garnet adds a mystical and romantic hue to this gemstone. Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, was known for her beauty and purity. One day, while Persephone was playing with her companions in a meadow, the earth suddenly split open, and Hades, the god of the underworld, appeared before her in a black chariot. Struck by her beauty, Hades decided to abduct her and make her his wife. Amidst Persephone’s terror, Hades swept her into his powerful arms and vanished into the chasm. In the underworld, Persephone became the queen of Hades. However, her mother, Demeter, could not bear the pain of losing her daughter. Upon learning of her daughter’s abduction, Demeter wandered the earth in search of Persephone, causing all life to wither and the land to become barren. Moved by Demeter’s persistence, Zeus ordered Hades to return Persephone to her mother. Before returning to the world of the living, Hades gave Persephone a pomegranate.
